Communiqu? of GUAM – Czech Republic meeting

On July 1, 2008 in Batumi, Georgia, in the framework of the third Summit of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, H.E. Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg.

Acknowledging the important role of GUAM in promoting regional cooperation aimed at developing common space of integration, security and stability in the GUAM area and thus being an important component of the European politico-security architecture, as well as the position of the Czech Republic, being a member of NATO and of the EU, deeply committed to strengthening relations with East European countries,

Recognizing benefits of launching practical sector-based cooperation, especially, in the fields of transportation, energy security and education, as a long-term undertaking aimed at accelerating democratization and economic transformation in GUAM area, as well as mutual trade exchange,

GUAM and the Czech Republic expressed joint readiness in developing partnership and practical cooperation in areas of common interest. The Czech Republic also agreed to facilitate cooperation in the GUAM-Visegrad Group format as well as further promote strengthening of cooperation between the GUAM and EU member states.

Both sides expressed their conviction that a peaceful resolution of the protracted conflicts in the GUAM area, based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and the inviolability of their internationally recognized borders, as well as other basic principles of international law, will considerably strengthen international peace, security and stability and pave the way for lasting and full-scale regional cooperation.

The sides decided to agree on the date and venue of the next GUAM-Czech Republic meeting through diplomatic channels.
