On May 21-22, 2013 the GUAM Secretariat in Kyiv hosted the 12th meeting of the Working Sub-Group on Combating Drug Trafficking (WGSDT), which took place under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship.

The delegations exchanged information on the development of national legislation, the operational situation and measures being taken by GUAM member states to counteract the illegal circulation of narcotics, psychotropic substances and their precursors.

Participants reviewed the outcomes of GUAM’s participation in the UNODC Afghan Opiate Trade Project (AOTP).

The Working Sub-Group discussed the course of working out analytical summaries on the situation with crime and the tendencies observed in GUAM member states in 2012 with respect to combating illegal drug trafficking, as well as practical issues of use within GUAM unified requests and reports of drug seizures.

The delegations reconfirmed the significance of exchanging information on the detection of new psychoactive substances and the procedure for its registration in national lists of controlled substances.

During the meeting, participants also addressed issues with respect to broadening international cooperation in combating illegal drug trafficking, including the possibilities of using the GUAM Virtual Center channels.

The outcomes of the meeting were reflected in the resultant Protocol. The next meeting of the Working Sub-Group is scheduled to take place in November 2013 in Baku.
