On April 14, 2016, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine, Mr Li Yang-Gu, received Secretary General of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM, Mr A. Efendiev.
During the lengthy conversation, the Secretary General spoke in detail about the history of the creation, functioning and main characteristics of the Organization, directions of cooperation of the GUAM countries, peculiarities of the regional context. The Secretary General informed the Ambassador about the main goals and tasks facing the Organization at its current stage of development in the light of dynamic changes in the GUAM region and around it.
The Secretary General spoke about the main priorities of the Chairmanship of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the current year. The accent, in particular, was made on the practical implementation of the GUAM Transport Corridor Development Concept, as well as the Agreement on the Free Trade Area. During the discussion, a thorough exchange of views took place on the development and functioning of transport and transit initiatives linking Europe and Asia.
The Secretary General spoke in detail about the experience and the existing practice of international cooperation of GUAM both with other countries and with international organizations.
During the conversation, the role of South Korea as an important trade and economic partner of the GUAM countries was noted, and mutual interest in further expansion and deepening of such cooperation was underlined. In this context, there was also an exchange of views on possible directions and format of GUAM cooperation with the Republic of Korea.
The parties expressed interest in continuing contacts and exchanging information.
