STATEMENT
on situation in Georgia

Presidium of the Baltic Assembly.

expresses its continued support to sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders,

condemns militarization of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia,

underlines that growing instability in the Caucasus region is a serious threat to the long-term stability and security globally,

urges all parties concerned to ensure safe and dignified return of displaced persons and fair investigation of alleged cases of ethnic cleansing,

stresses the importance of international peacekeeping and the presence of neutral peacekeeping and policing forces in the conflict areas,

invites the conflicting parties to confer the obligations of mediator on international organizations, solving the disputes through adherence to the international agreements and obligations previously entered into by the parties and through constructive dialogue based on good-neighbourly relations, spirit of openness and universally recognized norms of  international law,

expresses confidence that increased cooperation between the Baltio Assembly and the GUAM ParliamentaryAssembly will promote the values of democracy, security, social and economic stability in wider Europe.
