On November 7-8, 2012, the International Workshop on Nuclear Security Issues for GUAM countries took place in Chisinau, the Republic of Moldova. The workshop was organized by the National Agency for Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activity of the Republic of Moldova (NARNRA) and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM).

Representatives of national nuclear and radiation regulatory authorities, security and law enforcement agencies, ministries of foreign affairs, largest operators, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, as well as experts from IAEA, the USA, the Great Britain, Sweden, World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS), Southeast European Law Enforcement Center (SELEC), EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) participated in the workshop.

A large spectrum of issues of guaranteeing security of use, storage and trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials was discussed during the event, including: the role of international organizations and instruments in improving nuclear security, development of national legislations, mechanisms of prevention of threats, inter-agency cooperation, strengthening of nuclear security culture. A special attention was paid to possibilities of further development of regional cooperation, exchange of good experience and expertise.
