On September 26, 2011, as part of his working visit to Kyiv, the Acting President of the Republic of Moldova, his Excellency Mr. Marian Lupu, visited the GUAM Secretariat. The Secretary General of GUAM, Mr. Valeri Chechelashvili, informed the Acting President of the Republic of Moldova about the current cooperation that is taking place within the GUAM framework and the prospects for the Organisation’s development.
Particular attention was awarded to the implementation of projects and cooperation programmes involving GUAM. It was noted that, this year’s domestic trade in the GUAM region experienced a growth in turnover of about 20% and it is expected to reach approximately USD 4.5 billion for the year. By the end of the year, GUAM Virtual Centre for Combatting Organised Crime will put in place a system of cryptographic protection. It is also envisaged that, by the end of the year, the Concept for GUAM transport transit corridor will be approved at the level of the heads of respective agencies responsible for transport development in the GUAM member states. The GUAM Secretary General emphasised the importance of the Joint Internationsl Conference organized by the GUAM Parliamentary Assembly and Baltic Assembly, to be held on October 10-11 of this year in Baku, Azerbaijan and expressed hope that the delegation from the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova will actively take part in this forum. For his part, the Acting President of the Republic of Moldova has promised to promote cooperation within the GUAM format.
The GUAM Secretariat also hosted a meeting between the Acting President of the Republic of Moldova and representatives of the Moldovan Diaspora in Ukraine. During the meeting, the Acting President informed members of the Diaspora about the political processes occurring in the Republic of Moldova and answered a number of questions from the audience.
