April 13, 2016, Secretary General of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM, Mr A. Efendiev, was received by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Ukraine, Mr R. Vashchuk.
During the conversation, the Secretary General spoke about the situation in the GUAM region and around it as a result of imposed and fueled conflicts, as well as new dynamics caused by the processes connected with the implementation of large regional projects and the connection of new countries to these processes. It was stressed that this situation opens up new opportunities in the region and requires more close coordination and adequate actions from the GUAM countries.
The Secretary General spoke about the measures being taken by the GUAM member countries and the Organization as a whole to restart its activities, the plans and priorities of the Chairmanship of the Republic of Azerbaijan in this regard. In particular, it was noted that the main efforts will be directed to the implementation of the GUAM Transport Corridor Development Concept and the Free Trade Area Agreement.
The Secretary General also noted the interest of the GUAM countries in expanding and deepening international cooperation.
As a result of an interesting conversation, an agreement was reached to hold a separate meeting with representatives of the Embassy of Canada in the GUAM Secretariat in order to learn more about the activities of GUAM and work out specific areas and directions for possible interaction.
