On October 30, 2012 in Baku and on November 1, 2012 in Tbilisi, the International Road Union, jointly with the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, held an official presentation of the “Model Highway” pre-project research on the Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi-Trabzon section. This research is needed to determine the main options for realising the “Model Highway” project in the South Caucasus.
The presentation involved representatives of government structures from the Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgia, main international financial institutions (ABR), regional organisations (TRASECA, OSCE), representatives of the business community, and the Programme Coordinator of the GUAM Secretariat.
Participants in the presentation supported the IRU’s initiatives aimed at developing auxiliary road infrastructure in the South Caucasus and facilitating international road transportation in Eurasia. They also stressed, based on the results of pre-project research, the necessity of further coordination between all participants in the “Model Highway” project so that it can be realised.
