On December 16-17, 2013, the GUAM Secretariat in Kyiv, Ukraine hosted the 13th meeting of the Working Sub-Group on Combating Drug Trafficking (WGSDT), which took place under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship and involved a UNODC representative.
The delegations exchanged information on developing national legislation, the operational situation and GUAM member states’ measures to counteract the illegal trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic substances and its precursors.
During the meeting, participants examined issues related to GUAM member states and the Organization’s participation in events under the European Union “Heroin Route II – Information Networks” Project, as well as participation in the UNODC Afghan Opiate Trade Project (AOTP).
The delegations discussed the possibility of organising joint events on criminal analysis and risk analysis, involving international experts.
The Working Sub-Group discussed the course for working out analytical summaries on the situation with crime in 2013, as well as tendencies in GUAM member states in combating illegal drug trafficking.
The parties discussed the possibility of extending the use of the GUAM Law Enforcement Center by national agencies involved in combating illegal drugs trafficking.
The participants exchanged information on the detection of new psychoactive substances.
The outcomes of the meeting were reflected in the resultant Protocol. The next meeting of the Working Sub-Group is scheduled to take place in May 2014.
