On October 11-12, 2011, the GUAM Secretariat in Kyiv, Ukraine hosted the 9th Meeting of the Working Sub-Group on Combating Drug Trafficking (WGS-DT), which took place under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship.
The delegations informed their colleagues about the development of legislation, the operational situation, the member states’ measures in this field, cooperation at the bilateral and a multilateral levels, as well as within the framework of other international and regional organisations and structures.
The delegations exchanged information on the outcomes of conducting the joint operations of law enforcement agencies “Narcostop-2011”.
The Working Sub-Group discussed the possibilities of broadening direct channels between the relevant ministries and agencies, both at the national and regional levels.
Participants considered the possibility of conducting joint research on the international routes used in the trafficking of Afghan opiates.
The Working Sub-Group also supported the development of cooperation with the Southeast European Law Enforcement Centre (SELEC) in the sphere of anti-drug trafficking measures.
The outcomes of the meeting were reflected in the resultant Protocol. The next meeting of the WGS-DT is scheduled to take place in April 2012 in Baku.
